University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: UB01-02. From an album held in University of Bristol Library, Special Collections (ref: DM2520). This photograph may have been taken in Singapore. This image has been reproduced on an old post card and entitled 'Chinese Doctor'. In De La Mer de Chine au Tonkin, this image is captioned 'Lettré retiré des fonctions mandarinales', which may be translated as 'A scholar or intellectual (literati) and retired mandarin'. The long fingernails signify high class and that the man did not do manual or humble work with his hands. He appears to have a cleft lip (hairlip).
