The Lunghua Civilian Assembly Centre (C.A.C.) was an internment camp located on what is now the campus of Shanghai High School. John Christopher Huckstep is the taller teenager in the centre of the photograph, with glasses and a tanned complexion. His father, Herbert Huckstep, ensured that the 350 interned children were taught a wide range of subjects at the school in the camp – the Lunghwa Academy – including using brown paper bags to write on.
