This photograph depicts ‘The Huanggutan Incident’ at Huanggutan railway station, near Shenyang (Mukden), which occurred on 4th June 1928. Firemen are seen extinguishing the still-smouldering debris beneath a destroyed railway flyover. This was the assassination of the Fengtian warlord Zhang Zuolin (Chang Tso Lin; Chang Tso-lin), whose train was blown up by dynamite. Zhang died of his injuries a few days later.
