Gardner is listed as control clerk at the Admiralty Department of Works in Yokohama. In the China Directory for 1874, Russell Robertson is listed as British consul in Yokohama and W. G. Stronach as Acting Vice-Consul and British Assessor at the Mixed Court in Shanghai. In 1879 Stronach was serving as British consul in Beihai (Pakhoi). See NA11-02 (another photograph of student interpreters).
