This is a scene of devastation at the Fengtai (丰台) locomotive shed, Peking (Beijing), following its destruction by ‘Boxer’ rebels on 28th May 1900. The photo was taken during wintry weather, some time after international expeditionary forces had entered Peking on 14th August 1900 to relieve the besieged foreign legations. At the scene are the mangled remains of at least seven locomotives. The Chinese characters above the locomotive shed entrance indicate the date of construction as 1898 (Guangxu - 光緒帝 - 23rd year).
