The twelve-story Sun Company Building (大新公司 'Daxing gongsi') was the tallest building in Guangzhou until 1940. According to Virgil K. Y. Ho: 'Within it was a department store, a hotel, a bank, a restaurant and a roof-top amusement park' ('Understanding Canton: Rethinking Popular Culture in the Republican Period' [Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2005], p. 36).
