University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: OH03-056. Hsia Kwan (pinyin: Xiaguan; Chinese: 下关; other: Shia Kuan, Hsiakuan; modern Chinese: 中山码头; modern pinyin: Zhongshan matou) sits on the banks of the Yangtze and is still the port for Nanjing. The building on the left is 'Jiangnan No. 1' (江南第一楼) teahouse. To its right is a general store that sells clocks, watches, clothes, food stuff and miscellaneous Western goods. The sign on this building reads: WRUNGCHONG & CO. / SHIP'S COMPRADORES / GENERAL STORE-KEEPERS. See OH03-057 and OH03-058.
