Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: ML05-d67. This photograph was reproduced in ‘The Unknown War, North China 1937-1945' by Michael Lindsay (London, 1975), with the caption: Rag paper making in small mountain village, Hsiao F'eng Ku. This is interesting as showing the extent to which even remote country areas could be self sufficient. The paper was rough but, thirty years later, has not deteriorated like wood pulp paper. Translation of the caption in Chinese on the back of the print (1942年 平西口 制纸): 1942, Pingxikou, making papers.
