William Band and Michael Lindsay taught advanced radio engineering classes to twenty-six handpicked soldiers from around the Jinchaji base area, many of whom went on to have significant post-war careers. General Nie Rongzhen (Nieh Jung-chen 聂荣臻) (1899-1992) was the Commander of the Jinchaji Military Region. Front row (left to right): Hsiao Li Lindsay with Erica Lindsay, Nie Rongzhen, Claire Band, William Band, Lü Zhengcao, Zhang Ruihua (Nie’s wife), Liu Sha (Lü’s wife). Back row (left to right): Cheng Zihua, Michael Lindsay and two unidentified men. Trained at the University of Liverpool, William Band taught physics at Yenching University, Beijing. Claire and William Band fled Beijing with the Lindsays on 8 December 1941. Claire and William Band are the authors of 'Two Years with the Chinese Communists' (Yale University Press, 1948).
