Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: KA-s29. The woman on the left, holding the fan, is Futakami Chitose, a book lover who often went to a Japanese bookshop managed by Kanzo Uchiyama, a friend of Lu Xun. The woman on the right is Oshima Shizuko (大島静子). The man in the middle is likely the elder brother of Futakami Chitose, Abe Naoko's mother. The caption with this photograph was most probably written by Abe Naoko. Jessfield Park (兆豐公園 Zhaofeng gongyuan) is now called Zhongshan Park (中山公园 'Zhongshan gongyuan'). The plant is elephant grass. See KA-s31.
