University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: JC-s377. HMS Orlando was launched in 1888 and first served on the Australia Station. The cruiser was assigned to the China Station in 1899. During the Boxer Uprising sailors from HMS Orlando formed part of the force led by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Seymour attempting to relieve the British Legation in Beijing. A replica of a bell captured from the Taku Forts forms part of a memorial to HMS Orlando in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, England. The Orlando left Chinese waters in 1902 and was sold for scrapping in 1905. Plymouth Hoe can be seen in the background of this photograph. See JC-s379.
