University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: VH02-161. Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution reference: L04357-069c. Jiaoshan 焦山 (Tseaou-Shan or Siung Chan), known as Silver Island in English-language sources, near Chinkiang (Zhenjiang) was a sacred island for training Buddhist priests, by the Yangtze River. This photograph is reproduced in History of Photography in China 1842-1860 by Terry Bennett, on page 130, as part of a two-plate panorama. Photograph by William Jocelyn. Another important nearby Buddhist site was Jinshan 金山 or “Golden Island” - see Hv38-21. See also Wi01-04.
