The Emperor's Temple is described as follows in 'A Pictorial Handbook to Canton': ‘The Emperor’s Temple was built in the early part of the 18th Century. It is situated in the same street as the Viceroy’s Literary Club. On certain days during the year all Civil and Military mandarins are obliged to come here to worship the Imperial Tablets of the Emperor and Empress.’ Source: 'A Pictorial Handbook to Canton' (Middlesbrough, Hood & Co., 1905), p. 11.
