This photograph shows part of the fortified perimeter of the Legation Quarter, as well as part of the ‘glacis’ or open space, a buffer zone cleared of buildings after the Boxer Uprising to prevent further surprise attacks etc. Later the glacis was used for sporting activities. On the right is the British Legation Guard (B.L.G.) Entrance.
