Teams of railway navvies were engaged by British Royal Engineers military railway units to assist with recovery of railway rails, fishplates, and other railway equipment which had been torn up by the Boxers. Even the railway trucks had been built using scraps of the remains of destroyed rolling stock. This photograph was probably taken near Fengtai, Peking (Beijing). See also NA06-16 for a photograph of an improvised locomotive built by the Royal Engineers.
