University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: EH01-072. This photograph is thought to depict a special concert event involving the Shanghai Public Band (as the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra was then known), expanded with some amateur players (mostly female) from the Shanghai Philharmonic Society (and chorus). One of the characteristics of the Shanghai Public Band was that several of the musicians were Filipino. In the centre is Rudolf Buck, who was the conductor of the Shanghai Public Band /Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, from 1907 to 1919. See also EH01-074.
