University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: BL-n047. Caption on typed list accompanying the box of negatives: '23: As above'.  As above = 'Bamboo ramparts'. On the handwritten list, this photograph is captioned: 'Chinese g.p.'  This Chinese gun platform was erected against the Tartar wall, overlooking the Legations, Peking (Beijing), during the Siege of the Legations, Boxer Uprising. A similar image was published in the Illustrated London News (10 November 1900, page 681) and captioned: "THE RAMP CONSTRUCTED BY THE CHINESE TO ENABLE THEM TO HOIST HEAVY GUNS ON TO THE WALL OF PEKING. 'The intention of the Chinese to bombard the Legations from this point was not carried out'". Digitised from a negative made for a copy print.  See also BL-n045.
