Hughes, Jabez

‘As Daguerre’s patent did not cover Scotland, HUGHES – though a Londoner – opened a daguerrotype studio in Glasgow in 1848. Seven years later he bought Mayall’s studio in the Stand when the latter moved to Regent Street. In 1862 he took over a studio in Ryde, Isle of Wight, and became official photographer to Queen Victoria at Osborne. Hughes is the author of a popular manual on the wet collodian process.’ Source: Masterpieces of Victorian Photography 1840-1900, From the Gernsheim Collection (Arts Council of Great Britain, 1951).
