Hayward Family Collection

This is a collection of photographs from a family album which may have been compiled by Ethel Mary Maitland (née Wilcockson), the only child of Herbert and Susan Wilcockson. The photographs are of members of the family, and scenes in and around Shanghai, and Japan, c.1890s-c.1910. Ethel Wilcockson married Edward William Maitland in 1899, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Shanghai, and the couple then lived in Yokohama, Japan. Herbert Wilcockson was head of the silk department at Arnhold, Karberg & Co., Shanghai, returning to England in 1906. The photograph album also served as a stamp album, containing randomly affixed used postage stamps. The captions in the album are thought to have added at a later date by Doris (Dollie) Hawkes (née Hayward), a niece by marriage to Susan Wilcockson. The album is held in Special Collections, University of Bristol Library, ref: DM3229/1. See also the Charles Darwent Collection, which is an album given to Herbert Wilcockson by Revd. Charles Darwent and was a companion Hayward family heirloom to this album. HPC ref: Hy01.
