Fry, John Gurney Collection
The John Gurney Fry Collection consists of an album thought to have been compiled by John Gurney Fry, who was born on 4 October 1838, and died on 31 October 1877 at Hornchurch, Essex, England, aged 38. John Gurney Fry was the brother of Jane Augusta Fry (1839-1887) and Frederick William Fry (1842 - 1901 or 1910) – being the grandchildren of Elizabeth Fry, the prison reformer. It seems that the album was later owned in turn by both Jane Augusta Fry and Frederick William Fry after the early death of their brother. John Gurney Fry was a partner of John Silverlock & Company, merchants, in Fuzhou (Foochow). Frederick William Fry was a clerk at the same company. Many of the photographs in the album are by Lai Fong (Afong Studio) and a few are by John Thomson, dating from the late 1860s to the early 1870s. Work in progress. More images to be added soon.
